Festival of India opens its arms

Since 1993, the Festival of India has celebrated traditional foods, fashions and culture. But this year, organizers sought to go mainstream, inviting performers that crossed cultures and exhibits that crossed generations.

"We wanted to bring bigger awareness and more communities outside the Indian community," said Yogi Chugh, vice president of the Festival of India. "India is where we were born, but America is our home."

Organizers estimated that about 50,000 people attended the two-day festival, held in a lot near Lake Elizabeth. That's a significant leap from the 5,000 it attracted 13 years ago.
